Whether you‘re dancing to an Oompa band at Oktoberfest in Mt. Angel or square-dancing at the Buckaroo in Molalla, you’re celebrating the legacies and traditions of Oregon’s immigrant ancestors. We’re (almost all of us) the descendants of immigrants, whether they arrived last century or last year.&nbsp; In the heart of Oregon farm country, we know our communities have always depended on hardworking immigrant families. They work our farms and nurseries, staff our small businesses. They are our neighbors. They came here to work hard, to put down roots and raise their families. They deserve our respect, and they surely deserve protection from an out-of-control administration. Trump and his Republican allies are sending armed agents into our communities to kidnap our neighbors. It is state-sponsored terror, directed at the most vulnerable people in our community, by a regime that is hell-bent on distracting Americans from illegal wars and billionaire hand-outs.&nbsp; Roy's grandparents fled fascism in Europe to build new lives in new lands. He knows what it looks like when a government scapegoats and victimizes minority communities. He will not look away; he will not be quiet about it.&nbsp; Roy will fight federal abuse of power and stand with our immigrant neighbors. He will hold Oregon’s public safety agencies accountable to our state’s sanctuary laws, and he will advocate for pathways to citizenship that benefit Oregon and its new Oregonians.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Roy believes Oregon will be the first state in the nation to provide universal healthcare. He has faith in all involved to think bigger. Because what we have right now is not working.&nbsp; America is far below every other rich nation on Earth in our lifespans, health outcomes, and costs. It’s nuts. We can do better in Oregon. We can make sure you all have healthcare. So you’re free to start that business, or buy that house, and not fear that you’ll lose it all if you or someone in your family gets sick.Oregon has long been a leader in health reformIn rural Oregon, it’s harder to find a doctor than it used to be. It’s more expensive to see one, when you do. Because MAGA Republicans in Congress failed to act to preserve health insurance premium subsidies, thousands of working Oregonians and small business owners saw their premiums jump by 100 and even 200 percent. Some had to drop coverage altogether because they simply can't afford it anymore.&nbsp;The predictable outcome in the short term is that some health insurance providers like PacificSource and Providence are leaving the individual market altogether. And in the next few years, thousands of Oregon families who are otherwise eligible for the Oregon Health Plan stand to lose their health insurance because MAGA Republicans in Congress gutted Medicaid to hand billionaires a permanent tax cut. It was the single greatest transfer of wealth from the poorest to the richest in American history. Oregon GOP legislators didn't make even the tiniest squeak of protest. Our district deserves a representative who will fight for what’s right, not seat-warmers clinging to their deeply unpopular leader while our families suffer.&nbsp; Meanwhile, across rural Oregon, private equity firms are buying up hospitals and clinics, squeezing out every dollar before moving on and leaving communities with fewer options and higher costs. The insurance companies and pharmaceutical giants funding all of this have spent decades buying the politicians who write the rules — and those politicians are delivering. And when it comes to the most personal healthcare decisions — the ones made in exam rooms, in difficult moments, in consultation with doctors and the people we love — Roy believes those decisions belong to patients and their doctors. Not to politicians. Not to insurance companies. Not to a government that has never met you and doesn't know your life. Abortion is healthcare. Roy will fight to keep it that way here in Oregon.

America is far below every other rich nation on Earth in our lifespans, health outcomes, and costs. It’s nuts. We can do better in Oregon.

Fix Our Healthcare System

Roy has raised four kids through Oregon's public schools. He loves learning and the gift and power of inspiring curiosity and learning in young minds. A guiding principle of Roy’s – as a father, public servant, and Oregonian – is that the goal of raising a child is to guide them from Dependent to Independent. To build up their strength and skills so that they’re capable of flying with their own wings.Our public schools are falling short, and we need our teachers, parents, and administrators to do better, for our kids and the future of Oregon. We will need big ideas and better cooperation, flexibility and goals.&nbsp; Roy also believes we need to look at how our pre-K-12 system is set up. We're running a 19th century system in a 21st century reality. Kids need more than content — they need to know how to think. How to question. How to navigate a financial system that will hand them a credit card before it teaches them what interest means. Every kid should come out of school in Oregon financially literate enough to keep them from making the same bad choices that see young people entering adulthood drowning in debt. And every kid deserves to graduate knowing how to think for themselves. Trump and his Republican allies, nationally and here in Oregon, are defunding public education, rewriting history, banning books, attacking critical thinking, gutting higher education funding, and funneling public money into private schools — not because it helps kids learn, but because it rewards the billionaires and right-wing interest groups who put them in office.&nbsp; Roy will fight for Oregon’s students and teachers, because we can do better.

Marion County Democratic Party Endorses Independent Roy Kaufmann for HD18

The Central Willamette Valley has some of the best working farmland in America. That didn't happen by accident. Roy will stand for Oregon's land the way Oregon's greatest leaders always have. Fifty years ago, Republican Governor Tom McCall led the fight to protect Oregon's farmlands, forests, and wild natural lands from what he called the "wastrels of the land" — big developers, financial speculators, and anyone who would exploit Oregon's natural resources for short-term profit without regard for the public good. That fight has never really ended. The same arguments for chipping away at Oregon's land use protections have been made for fifty years. They haven't gotten better, smarter, or truer with age.&nbsp; But now we hear the same anti-planning arguments coming from some urban Democrats. And today the threat has a new face: Data centers swallowing up prime Willamette Valley farmland and guzzling millions of gallons of water to run soulless, bottomless pits of energy to enrich someone somewhere else. Development pressure on agricultural land keeps building. And a federal government that has decided environmental protections are obstacles to profit is making all of it easier. Some will call this a property rights issue. It surely is — for all of us. Oregon's land use laws mean your neighbor can't put a warehouse next to your farm. A developer can't drain your water to run a data center. The farmland, forests, and wilderness that make Oregon so special stay intact for your kids and grandkids.&nbsp;

Protect Our Wilderness and Working Lands

<h3>HD18 runs on agriculture. The farms, nurseries, Christmas tree farms, vineyards, and grass seed farms that define our landscape are families, legacies, and the core of this community's identity and economy.&nbsp; </h3><h4>Roy believes we don’t just need to safeguard our farmers. We need to cultivate a new generation of farmers, growing food for Oregonians and feeding grateful customers around the world. </h4>We need to double-down on agricultural and natural education. In a world increasingly disconnected from the land, Oregonians have made it clear: we want to stay connected to ours.&nbsp; Yet, right now our farming families are under pressure. Trump's self-defeating tariffs and reckless Iran war are causing chaos across the globe, and that chaos is hitting Oregon family farms and nurseries directly — raising the cost of fertilizers and greenhouse materials and driving diesel to never-before-seen levels, all while creating the kind of uncertainty that makes it impossible to plan a season, let alone a future.&nbsp; Thanks to Trump policies, farm bankruptcies are at a national high point. And according to the Oregon Health Authority, '"...workers in agriculture, forestry and fishing have a suicide rate that is five times the state average.”&nbsp; Farmers approaching retirement are asking whether their kids can even afford to take over, whether the next generation will see farming as a viable path.&nbsp; The snake-oil salesmen who promised to fight for working people are making life harder for the working people of HD18 while corporate agribusiness absorbs the damage and moves on. Roy will fight for farmers, and for the farmworkers that power those farms, because when everyone does better, everyone does better.
