Then they walk off the job rather than do the hard work of negotiating solutions to the challenges Oregon faces. Oregon Democrats, on the other hand, can seem to forget that those solutions are not always one-size-fits-all. What works for Portland might not work for rural Oregon. HD18 is a place of close-knit communities and wide open land — home to Aurora, Barlow, Butteville, Donald, Molalla, Mulino, Mt. Angel, Scotts Mills, and Silverton (Roy’s hometown!).</strong></h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">People here work hard, look out for their neighbors, and want their children&nbsp; to have a future in the community where they were raised. Farmers worry that their kids will be forced to sell. Families watch as&nbsp; healthcare gets harder to access and housing near impossible to afford. Young adults doubt that they’ll ever own a home of their own, while our town leaders fight the state bureaucracy year after year just to fix the roads.&nbsp;</span><br></p><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">And underneath all of it runs a shared frustration with a federal regime that is making everything harder: A disastrous, unnecessary war driving gas and diesel prices through the roof, tariffs squeezing family farms and nurseries, Medicaid cuts threatening rural healthcare, public school teachers and students getting the short end of the stick, while multimillionaires and billionaires get tax breaks.</span><br></p><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">The frustration is real, and it isn't partisan. Roy hears it everywhere he goes. It's why he's running.</span><br></p>

<p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">When you're dancing the polka to an Oompa band at Oktoberfest, thrilling to foklórico at the Fiesta Mexicana, and throwing down at the Buckaroo hoedown, you are celebrating the legacies and traditions of Oregon’s immigrant ancestors. We are (almost all of us) the descendants of immigrants, whether they arrived in the last century or the last year.&nbsp;</span><strong><br></strong></p><p>Here in the heart of Oregon farm country, we know our communities have always depended on hardworking immigrant families. They work our farms and nurseries, staff our small businesses. They are our neighbors. They came here to work hard, to put down roots and raise their families. They deserve our respect, and they surely deserve protection from an out-of-control administration.<br></p><p>Trump and his MAGA allies are sending armed agents into our communities to kidnap our neighbors. It is state-sponsored terror, directed at the most vulnerable people in our community, by a regime that is hell-bent on distracting Americans from illegal wars and billionaire hand-outs.&nbsp;<br></p><p>Roy's grandparents fled fascism in Europe to build new lives in new lands. He knows what it looks like when a government scapegoats and victimizes minority communities. He will not look away; he will not be quiet about it.&nbsp;</p><p>Roy will fight federal abuse of power and stand with our immigrant neighbors. He will hold Oregon’s public safety agencies accountable to our state’s sanctuary laws. And he will advocate for fair and legal pathways to citizenship that benefit Oregon and its new Oregonians.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br></p>

<p>Oregon has spent decades building toward something most states only dream about: a healthcare system where almost everyone is covered. In 2025, we achieved a 98% insurance coverage rate. The best rate in the nation. We made it a priority because Oregonians understood something fundamental. We all benefit when everyone can see a health care provider. And we all pay more when they can't — in emergency room visits, in charity care, in hospital rates that climb to cover the uncompensated costs that get passed right back to the rest of us.</p><p>That's why Roy believes Oregon will be the first state in the nation to achieve universal healthcare. The reform efforts of the last three decades have been valiant, and they've gotten us further than almost anyone else. But in the end these reforms have been Band-Aids on a broken system. It's time to build something better. Oregonians know how it's supposed to work. Roy will fight to make sure we get it done.<br></p><p>And when it comes to the most personal healthcare decisions — the ones made in exam rooms, in difficult moments, in consultation with doctors and the people we love — Roy believes those decisions belong to patients and their doctors. Not to politicians. Not to insurance companies. Not to a government that has never met you and doesn't know your life. <em>Abortion is healthcare. </em>Roy will fight to keep it that way here in Oregon.<br></p>

<p>America is far below every other rich nation on Earth in our lifespans, health outcomes, and costs. It’s nuts.<strong> </strong></p><p><strong>We can do better in Oregon.</strong></p>

<h2>Fix Our Healthcare System</h2>

<p>Roy raised four kids through Oregon's public schools. He loves learning, and he believes that one of the most powerful things we can do for a child is get them curious and keep them that way. As a father, public servant, and Oregonian, one of Roy's guiding principles is that the goal of raising a child is to guide them from dependence to independence — to build up their strength and skills so they can fly with their own wings.</p><p>Our public schools are not doing that well enough. Oregon's fourth graders rank near the bottom of the nation in both reading and math, gaps that have been widening for nearly two decades. We are spending more per student than most states and getting worse results. </p><p>The problem is partly structural. We're running a 19th century system in a 21st century reality. Kids need more than content — they need to know how to think. How to question. How to navigate a financial system that will hand them a credit card before it teaches them what interest means. Every kid should leave school with basic financial literacy. And every kid deserves to graduate knowing how to think for themselves.</p><p>The solution is partly local. CTE programs that connect students in Silverton or Molalla to real careers in farming, manufacturing, or healthcare keep talent in this district and give young people a reason to build their lives here. These programs take significant investment from districts and a sustained commitment to building local partnerships. Roy will fight to make sure they get both.</p>

<h4>Independent Candidate Roy Kaufmann Wins Democratic Write-in Vote for HD18</h4>

<p>HD18 runs on agriculture. The farms, nurseries, Christmas tree farms, vineyards, and grass seed farms that define our landscape are families, legacies, and the core of this community's identity and economy.</p><p>Roy believes we don't just need to protect what our farming families have built. We need to cultivate a new generation of farmers, growing food for Oregonians and feeding grateful customers around the world. We need to double down on agricultural and natural education. In a world increasingly disconnected from the land, Oregonians have made it clear: we want to stay connected to ours.</p><p>Yet right now our farming families are under pressure. Trump's self-defeating tariffs and reckless Iran war are causing chaos across the globe, and that chaos is hitting Oregon family farms and nurseries directly — raising the cost of fertilizers and greenhouse materials and driving diesel to never-before-seen levels, all while creating the kind of uncertainty that makes it impossible to plan a season, let alone a future. Farm bankruptcies are at a national high point. Farmers approaching retirement are asking whether their kids can even afford to take over, whether the next generation will see farming as a viable path.</p><p>The snake-oil salesmen who promised to fight for working people are making life harder for the working people of HD18 while corporate agribusiness absorbs the damage and moves on.</p><p>Roy will fight for farmers, and for the farmworkers that power those farms, for policies that keep family farming a viable path for the next generation.</p>

<p><strong>The Central Willamette Valley has some of the best working farmland in America. That didn't happen by accident. Roy will stand for Oregon's land the way Oregon's greatest leaders always have.</strong> </p>
